Improved Forest Management
Improving forest practices to increase carbon storage, protect biodiversity, and reduce emissions from unsustainable logging
What’s the challenge?
Forested areas are one of our front-line defences against the rising tide of climate change, trapping carbon and providing shelter for the thousands of species which make up the rich biodiversity of this planet – many of which we are at risk of losing. Forests act as a carbon sink (a natural reservoir that stores more carbon that it releases), absorbing a net 7.6 billion metric tonnes of CO2 per year, 1.5 times more carbon than the United States emits annually.
As illustrated by the Clean Air Task Force (CATF), “Forests hold enormous potential to help mitigate climate change by absorbing massive amounts of carbon dioxide through the leaves of trees and storing it away in trunks, branches, and soils. Private finance channelled through carbon markets is one way to fund management activities that boost forest carbon storage”.

How does Improved Forest Management work?
Improved Forest Management (IFM) practices are designed to avoid the emissions that would typically be created from harvest or natural disturbance of forested areas (for example, wildfires), as well as enhancing the capacity for these areas to naturally store carbon. They centre around the concept of additionality, illustrating how these carbon benefits would not occur without the IFM project (i.e. The ‘baseline scenario’).
IFM methodologies typically include reducing the intensity of logging in a forest, encouraging natural regeneration of the forest and enriching the forest through planting new, native or commercially valuable tree species. They also include extending the length of time between harvests, setting aside some areas from harvesting (production-to-conservation), reducing forest degradation, and managing fire, pests, and disease.
These carbon credits are typically issued based on both avoided emissions and carbon removals. Avoided emissions are calculated as the difference between the emissions that would have occurred with the project in place compared to without the project (i.e., the difference between baseline and project scenario emissions). Carbon removals are quantified by measuring forest biomass growth and tracking changes in carbon stocks in aboveground and belowground tree biomass, and in some cases dead wood, litter, harvested wood products and soil organic carbon pools over time.
IFM projects should recognise, respect and embrace the governance systems within both Indigenous Peoples as well as local communities. This is proven to reduce conflict and increase the efficacy of projects, it also increases the likelihood that the rights of both Indigenous Peoples and local communities are protected.

Co-benefits of Improved Forest Management
Improved Forestry Management carbon credits offer a range of co-benefits, including:
- Biodiversity conservation: promoting/increasing protection for tree-covered areas protects habitats for thousands of species and maintains the environments that allow humans, plants and animals to thrive.
- Water cycle regulation: forests enhance watersheds (the land areas that collect and channel water into rivers and streams) by improving infiltration, reducing sedimentation and stabilising stream flows.
- Social benefits: culture, identity and livelihoods are strongly connected to natural spaces such as forests, enabling communities to continue to thrive. Where IFM projects take place on or affect the lands of either Indigenous Peoples or local communities, the CCPs ensure to uphold Indigenous rights; obtaining Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), and sharing revenues fairly.

A full list of all CCP-Approved methodologies, along with those still in assessment, can be found in our assessment status table.
CAR Mexico Forest Protocol (Version 3) has been approved pending remedial action by CAR to ensure adherence to CCP criteria by revising leakage accounting to be consistent with the latest research. Completion of the remedial action must be confirmed by the Integrity Council’s Governing Board before any carbon credits can be given the CCP label.
What percentage of credits do these methodologies represent?
VM0045 is a new methodology, with no credits issued to date (August 2025) and no projects registered as yet. Two projects are currently undergoing validation and expected to issue 258,000 credits annually.
ACR IFM on Non-Federal U.S. Forestlands is also a new methodology, with no credits issued to date (August 2025). Eighteen projects are listed under this methodology, encompassing nearly 500,000 acres.
